Born in 1888, Hector Carmichael of Munroe’s Point was a well-known Gaelic poet and local historian. His songs, many of which were humorous, report on community events and feature local characters, and were regularly sung at parties and milling frolics. One of his best known songs is “An t-Each Ruadh aig Roland Steele (Roland Steele’s Red Horse),” which was recorded by the Rankin Family on their 1990 album Fare Thee Well Love. Hector was profiled in Cape Breton’s Magazine in 1975 (Caplan 1980, 144–47).
