| Notes 1 | Lauchlin had sent a few sheep to St. Pierre, Miquelon, for which he expected the then usual currency of that place - cheap rum. He was longing much for word of the vessel that brought the sheep, and frequently inquired of the neighbors concerning the craft. The poet went one day with some logs to a saw mill near by. The miller was busy, but said he would saw his logs immediately if he would get up some rhyme for Lauchlin's exported sheep. The poet went out for a few minutes, and came back with the "prayer" as if made by Lauchlin himself. |
| Notes 2 | Donald Gobha was born in Glenelg, Morar, Scotland on April 3rd 1807. He emigrated to Nova Scotia with his father in 1819. They settled at the South West River, Margaree. Donald apprenticed as a blacksmith and learned French. He subsequently settled in Strathlorne, Inverness County, where he raised a large family of five sons and four daughters with his wife Mary MacIsaac. He moved to Grand Mira in 1868 and died there in 1890. |
