Notes 2 |
The metadata for the Cape Breton Gaelic Folklore Collection has been compiled from an index at St FX University and additional information was entered by volunteers during online transcription frolics in 2021. At the end of the Language in Lyrics project in March 2022, the metadata is still incomplete and it is hoped that further funding will be secured for a project dedicated to expanding the metadata and completing transcriptions for these songs. |
Notes 3 |
Inverness County tradition has it that the subject of this song was a returned sea captain living in the southern part of the county who became confused, possibly of old age, and went missing in the woods. He was found sitting in a (presumably fallen) hollow tree equipped with oars, convinced that he was at sea. |
Notes 4 |
The melody is characterized by a shift in mode between the refrain (Dorian) and the verse (Aeolian). |
