Notes 1 Mrs. Patterson: 'Catrìona nighean Ailein Chaluim Pìobaire' (1872-1964). Listen to tracks by her under person ID 5441 on Tobar an Dualchis. There is a bio on the website for the MacEdward Leach Collection: https://www.mun.ca/folklore/leach/singers/dpatterson.htm
Notes 2 This song tells of the time when there was a bardic contest between Nic Iain Fhinn annd Nic a' Mhanaich, two bardesses in the Old Country. The contest ends when Nic Iain Fhinn (who was said to have acquired her poetic skills from a fairy lover) attacked Nic a' Mhanaich with such biting satire she fell dead at the waulking table.
Notes 3 It is advised in Cape Breton not to sing this song at a concert or céilidh lest any of the Barrafolk or Uistmen present be provoked into a fight.
Notes 4 There are many notes to be enjoyed in the book for this song.
