"This song, of which the above are probably only a few verses, was written by a MacDonald fellow living in St. Margaret's Village near Bay St. Lawrence. The object of it was a certain Effie MacKinnon with whom the bard was greatly taken; he missed seeing her when she was on a visit from her home in Iona Rear, since he was busy taking in the hay. Pol is the father of John P. MacKinnon of Iona Rear who sang the song to me. Eoibh is the genitive of some name, Neil’s father; perhaps “Eugene” in Eng., or is it Adhaimh, gen. of Adhamh, Eng. “Adam?” John P. MacKinnon, Iona Rear, 1943." |
