Social Context The Catholic Order of Mass in Gaelic, together with other prayers. The front cover and title page are decorated with a Celtic cross with the words Permissu and Superiorum on either side. See also Lòchran an Anma, another Catholic text, which was published in Edinburgh in 1906 (Text 72).
Contents This volume contains a number of prayers, readings, and responses, that form part of the Catholic Mass, along with several additional prayers. The main sections of the missal are as follows:

Urnaighean Romh ’n Aifrinn (pp. 3-10): in Gaelic, including Gnìomh Creidimh (p. 5-6), Gnìomh Dòchais (p. 6), Gnìomh Aithreachais (p. 7), and Urnaigh An Ostail Anndra, (p. 10).

Language This text displays the vocabulary of the Gaelic Mass and of Catholic prayer. Prayers include those said during the Mass, and those that may be said privately. The order of the Mass is given, and this includes the responses by both priest (S.) and congregation (C.). For example, ‘S. Gu’n robh an Tighearna maille ribh. \ C. Agus ri d’spiorad-sa.’ (p. 41). In Aig a’ Choisrigeadh we find ‘A’ toirt taing dhut, bheannaich e, bhrist e, ’s thug e dha dheisciopuil, ag radh: Gabhaibh agus ithibh uile dheth so; oir se so mo chorpsa’ (p. 30), and at the Agnus Dei, we find ‘’Uain Dhé a tha ’toirt air falbh peacannan an t-saoghail, dian tròcair oirnn’ (p. 35).

Parts of the Mass to be spoken by the congregation include the Gnìomh Creidimh, which begins ‘Tha sinn ag creidsinn gu daingean gu’m beil aon Dia ann; agus gu ’m beil ann an Dia trì pearsaichean, an t-Athair, agus am Mac, agus an Spiorad Naomh. Gu’n do ghabh am Mac an nàdar daonda air giùlan na h-Òighe Moire le cumhachd an Spioraid Naoimh’ (p. 5); A’ Chréud, which begins ‘Creidim ann an aon Dia, an t-Athair uile-chumhachdach, Cruthadair nèamh agus talmhainn, a h-uile nì faicinneach agus neofhaicinneach’ (p. 21); the Gloria, which begins ‘Glòir do Dhia anns na h-àrdaibh, agus air talamh sìth do luchd na deagh thoile’ (p. 17); the Hosanna, which begins ‘Is Naomh, Naomh, Naomh, Tighearna Dia nan Saboth \ Tha nèamh agus talamh làn de d’ghlòir. \ Hosanna anns na h-àrdaibh’ (p. 27); and ‘A Thighearna, cha’n fhiach mise gu’n tigeadh tu stigh fo m’ fhàrdaich; ach abair am facal a mhàin; agus bithidh m’ anam sàbhailte’ (p. 37). Commonly used phrases include ‘An ainm an Athar, agus a’ Mhic, agus an Spioraid Naoimh. Amen.' (p. 3), ‘Tromh Iosa Crìosta ar Tighearna’ (p. 3), and ‘Thighearna nèamh agus talmhainn’ (p. 7).

The following readings from the Bible are incorporated: An Litir (Rom. xi. 33-36) on p. 19 and An Soisgeul (Matu xxviii. 18-20) on pp. 20-21. The text contains frequent references to the Saints and to other personages of importance in the teaching of the Catholic Church, e.g. ann an onair ... Naobh Eoin Baiste, nan naomh Ostal Peadar agus Pòl (p. 25), ri d’ Ostail ’ri d’naomh (p. 33), and am Pàp (p. 46).

A number of prayers are included as part of the Mass, e.g. ‘A Dhia uile-chumhachdaich shìorruith, a thiùraich do d’sheirbhisich, ann an aidmheil an fhìorchreidimh, glòir na Trianaid sìorruith aideachadh’ (p. 18) and ‘Is beannaichte thusa ’Thighearna, a tha ’gabhail beachd air na h-aigeil, ’s a tha na d’shuidhe air na Cherubim’ (p. 19). Some of the prayers mention offering sacrifices to God, e.g. mar ìobairt-aoraidh (p. 7), ìobairt-bhuidheachais (p. 7), ìobhairt-ìocaidh (p. 7), ìobairt Chuirp agus Fhala do Mhic ar Slànair (p. 7), and the acknowledgement of sin, e.g. ‘tha sinn duilich bho ghrùnnd ar cridhe gu’n do chuir sinn mìothlachd riabh ort le’r peacannam [sic]’ (p. 7).

This text contains many different appellations of the Deity, e.g. ‘a chionn gu’m beil thu uile-chumhachdach, uile-thròcaireach, agus uile-mhathasach, agus ro-fhìrinneach na d’ ghealladh’ (p. 6). The text also mentions the missionary commitment of the Catholic Church, e.g. ‘Tha sinn ag achanaich ort, o ’Thighearna, tromh luaidheachd Fuil do Mhic, gu’n deònaicheadh tu d’Eaglais naomh Chaitliceach a lìonsgaradh anns gach cèarna de’n t-saoghal, ’s iadsan a th’ ann an dorchadas a thaobh creidimh a thoirt gu slighe na fìrinne, los gu’n tig gach uile neach a stigh do’n aon Chrò fo’n aon bhuachaille’ (p. 8).
Orthography The orthography is on the whole characteristic of the late nineteenth century. Of particular interest are the forms of ag creidsinn, se, gu’m beil, sìorruith, and riabh, and the formation of certain close compounds, such as Atharnaoimh (p. 32), Ardshagart (p. 32), and uilenaomh (p. 32).
