Date Of Language Notes[Note added 13/4/18:] This poem was composed sometime in the mid to late 19th century. The introduction (p. 1) states that the poem was recited in Inverness on 12th January 1886, and that the poet has lived in the United States for 'more than forty years', i.e. since the 1840s. It is likely that the date of creation is close to when it was recited, in the late 19th century period: the orthography fits this time period, and the poet gives an overview of his time in America living in New York State and moving to Illinois. However, it is still possible that it was composed before 1871 (the late 19th century).

Geographical Origins Notes[Note added 13/4/18:] Some of the vocabulary used in this poem suggests that the poet was from the mainland Highlands, e.g. 'cranndaidh', 'dar', and possibly 'aing' (which according to Dwelly is from Sutherland, but also from Lewis). The beginning of the poem also states: ''Nuair bha na h-uaislean air cinntinn cruaidh oirnn / Ann san Taobh Tuath 's an robh sinn an Alb''.
